Theyr and the University of East London (UEL) to release a ‘Dynamic Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) Optimisation Solution’

London, UK Theyr, – a leader in voyage optimisation technology – in collaboration with the University of East London (UEL) is releasing an Integrated Carbon Intensity Integrator (CII) Optimisation Service. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to sustainable maritime innovation and decarbonisation.

In shipping operations, speed, fuel efficiency, safety, and emissions are all of equal significance. Multi-Objective Voyage Optimisation goes beyond the single-dimensional approach of optimisation solutions. This latest technology effectively considers a suite of variables, recognising that modern vessels navigate not only through weather systems but through a complex matrix of operational challenges. Multi-objective voyage optimisation balances priorities simultaneously under one computation, allowing operators to select routes that are not only faster or cleaner but tailored to their commercial and environmental goals. This approach, rooted in next-generation artificial intelligence, integrates with both high-resolution metocean forecast data and ship hydrodynamics models with innovative genetic algorithms, ensuring a comprehensive approach to modern maritime challenges.

Optimising for the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings has become a vital part of modern fleet operations. CII isn’t just a compliance metric — it reflects how efficiently a vessel moves cargo relative to its carbon footprint over time. Each ship is expected to demonstrate measurable year-on-year progress within a defined performance band, and that progress must be continuously tracked, verified, and improved.

Theyr created the (CII) algorithm for which UEL provided the methodology and proprietary data creating a novel solution to dynamically optimise shipping routes for carbon intensity performance. The integration provides operators with predictive and real-time CII ratings, enabling shipowners and charterers to proactively enhance their regulatory compliance and emissions strategies.

This unique algorithm enables real-time prediction and dynamic optimisation of CII – utilising high-resolution vessel digital twins and live met-ocean data – setting a new standard for intelligent, emissions-aware voyage and rating planning.

T.VOS dynamically recommends optimal routes for both current and future voyages. Through the APIs users have instant access to CII vessel ratings across all optimised voyages.

The service rolls out in two phases:

Phase I: August 2025 release delivers CII outputs across all T.VOS optimised routes.

Phase II: September 2025 delivers “optimal dynamic CII” route as a selectable option.

“Our collaboration with UEL significantly advances the inherent benefits of CII compliance requirements.” said David Young, CEO and Founder at Theyr. “This project showcases effective university–industry knowledge exchange with real-world impact, driven by Dr. Eleni Avaritsioti’s outstanding Business Analytics expertise in translating impactful research into sustainable business practices, that has led to an innovative environmental co-created solution”, added Professor Mansour Moniri, Director of Research & Knowledge Exchange at UEL.
